On 11 September, 2025, The University of Danang - University of Foreign Language Studies (UD-UFLS) held a ceremony celebrating its 40th anniversary (1985–2025).

In his commemorative address, UD-UFLS Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Long extended warm congratulations and deep gratitude to past and present leaders, faculty, staff, alumni and students whose dedication built the foundations and sustained the development of the university.

Rector of UD-UFLS reviewed key achievements across governance, curriculum development, and quality assurance, scientific research, international cooperation, facilities, finance and university governance reform.

UD-UFLS was among the first higher education institutions in Vietnam to complete two national institutional accreditation cycles; multiple programs have attained national and international quality standards; and alumni and students have earned distinctions in academic, cultural and language competitions.

The 40-year journey is a convergence of tireless effort, intellectual commitment and professional devotion. The university has continuously improved its multilingual, multicultural learning and research environment, broadened partnerships and affirmed a core role in supplying qualified human resources for socio-economic development in Central Vietnam and nationwide.

Looking ahead, the university recognizes its mission under recent Party conclusions and resolutions promoting foreign language teaching-specifically Conclusion No. 91-KL/TW on advancing foreign language instruction and gradually making English a second language in schools, and Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW on expanding Vietnamese language teaching and spreading Vietnamese cultural values abroad.

The leadership announced a target of achieving recurrent-expenditure financial autonomy starting from 2026, coupled with governance reform and strengthened financial capacity to ensure sustainable growth.

At the Ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu - Member of the City Party Committee, President of UD delivered an important speech, affirming that the anniversary a historic milestone and an occasion to honor the resilience and achievements forged through challenging but pride-filled decades. He conveyed sincere appreciation and congratulations to current and former leaders, faculty, staff, alumni and students of the university.

President of UD underlined that the university’s present stature rests first and foremost on generations of devoted educators, staff and learners whose professional passion, perseverance, creativity and sacrifice built a modern, reputable institution.

President of UD acknowledged the university’s major contribution in producing large numbers of bachelor’s and postgraduate language professionals meeting development and integration needs of Da Nang, the Central Region and the nation.

The university has also delivered a substantial volume of foreign-language instruction to students of other UD member universities. Its recognized strengths include a solid academic tradition, widely acknowledged training quality and above all the success of its alumni.

For its collective contributions over four decades, the university has received numerous emulation titles and high distinctions from the Party, the State and the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET). UD leadership expressed pride in UD-UFLS as a distinctive and prestigious pillar within UD system.

President of UD cautioned that, despite proud gains, the university must pursue breakthrough solutions to “advance and excel” amid Vietnam’s broader development; the national objective of elevating English toward second-language status; Da Nang’s post-merger urban expansion; and “growing economic openness, which is generating new growth drivers. These dynamics, he said, create a historic opportunity for the university to accelerate under the spirit of Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW.

President of UD urged the forward-looking development strategy to position the university as Vietnam’s leading language training institution with regional and global reach; outlined 05 priority orientations and solutions:

1) Quality enhancement: Continually renew curricula, content and teaching–learning methods in the context of Industry 4.0 and AI adoption; tighten academic discipline; cultivate a healthy scholarly environment. Place lecturers at the center of quality improvement with recognition and incentives for excellence and student commitment. The university should pioneer efforts to make English a second language and remain a trusted producer of language graduates and specialists for international integration.

2) Student-centered development: Treat learners as the core of all policies. Increase investment to support student research and extracurricular endeavors for holistic talent development. Build an alumni ecosystem as a bridge with society, nurturing loyalty so alumni view the university as a second home and actively contribute. Alumni success and learner satisfaction, he stressed, are the most credible measures of training quality.

3) International cooperation: Deepen faculty and student exchanges and joint research to mobilize additional resources. Leverage inherent strengths so the university becomes a standout in international cooperation within UD and Da Nang. Each lecturer should serve as a cultural ambassador while attracting more international students for study, internships and cultural experience, thereby honing students’ linguistic and intercultural competencies. UD-UFLS must truly be a multilingual cultural hub.

4) High-caliber faculty development: Implement structured training and upskilling plans tied to individual responsibility. Encourage doctoral study abroad and expand visiting scholar exchanges to attract more international lecturers, raising academic reputation and program quality. A professionally strong, dedicated faculty is the institution’s most valuable capital.

5) Governance innovation and digital transformation: Streamline organizational structures to optimize university autonomy and measure all management activities by substance and effectiveness. Build leadership and managerial cadres with vision, integrity and continuity; foster professional specialist staff with a service culture. Reform financial management under autonomy to ensure fairness, rational allocation and a people-centered approach so finance becomes a true development engine.

President of UD thanked MoET, Da Nang authorities, ministries, localities, agencies, organizations and businesses for longstanding support, expressing hope for continued guidance to advance the university’s role within UD’s overall development.

President of UD conveyed the guiding motto: Solidarity - Innovation - Breakthrough - Development, urging the university community to sustain its tradition, nurture aspirations for renewal and integration, remain united, agile and creative, and execute decisively to elevate the university into a national flagship for language education with regional ambitions.

During the ceremony, UD-UFLS received a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister, a Certificate of Merit from the Minister of Education and Training, an Emulation Flag from the Da Nang People’s Committee, and a Certificate of Merit from the Consul General of the Lao PDR.

04 collectives and 09 individuals were awarded Certificates of Merit by the Minister of Education and Training; 04 collectives and 07 individuals received Certificates of Commendation from the UD's President.

Complementing the anniversary, the university organized a business–education cooperation seminar on internationalizing training, a gathering of former staff and employees, an Alumni Day, and the cultural art performance “40 Years of UFLS - Proud Melodies.”
