Strengthening teaching and learning in foreign languages at member schools of UD

13/05/2025

Alongside the standard training programs, the member schools of the University of Danang (UD) also implement international standard programs, which include enhanced teaching and learning in foreign languages. This shift meets the demand for high-quality human resources in society and anticipates the policy of making English the second language in schools.

UD focuses its guidance on its member universities to strongly promote the implementation of English-taught programs and international joint training programs; encourage lecturers to teach their specialized subjects in English; promote and support students in using English-language materials, communication, and presentations.

UD continues to leverage the advantages of its regional university model by sharing resources, assigning the University of Foreign Language Studies - UD as the core institution for English language training,  promoting the development of the VN-UK Institute for Research and Executive Education (VNUK), UD into an international university model so that students meet the input and output standards of the Foreign Language Proficiency Framework.

The University of Economics - UD implements fully English-taught programs such as: International Business, Digital Marketing, E-commerce... Students admitted to these programs need to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher, or equivalent foreign language certificates as per the university's admission requirements.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doan Ngoc Phi Anh - Vice Rector of the University of Economics - UD, the opportunity to be admitted to the university's programs with foreign language certificates is quite high. Candidates with an IELTS certificate of 5.5 or higher, or a TOEFL iBT score of 46 or higher, can apply for the international regular bachelor's program with 2+2 and 3+1 transfer models and receive a degree from the partner university, as well as apply for three regular programs taught entirely in English.

For students who do not reach the initial English language requirement of IELTS 5.5, they can choose to enroll in a part-time program with 37% to 54% of the subjects in the curriculum are taught in English. At the end of the first academic year, students obtain an IELTS certificate with a score of 6.0, they can transfer to the full-time English-taught program if they wish.

A flexible point at the University of Economics - UD is that students can transfer from the fully English-taught program to the part-time program or the standard program if they no longer wish to study in English.

These programs open up numerous opportunities for international cooperation in training and research, enhancing faculty capacity, and creating favorable conditions for the university's students to transfer and study at many prestigious universities around the world in the most effective way.

At the University of Science and Technology - UD, students enrolled in the advanced program are required to achieve an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent certificates by the end of their first year. Even fundamental science subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry within the advanced program are taught in English.

The secondary criteria for admission to the Advanced Programs in Electronics - Telecommunications and Embedded Systems vary depending on the academic year, but typically the student's final English grade in 12th grade must be 7.5 or higher. The university provides a one-time grant per student for the English language proficiency certificate examination fee.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, President of UD, for English to become a second language in schools, it is necessary to create conditions to remove certain 'bottlenecks' so that universities can strengthen international cooperation. For example, this includes delegating and authorizing universities to organize international conferences without necessarily having to seek permission from the Ministry of Education and Training, or being more flexible in the procedures for receiving international funding.

This is the solution to unlock resources and leverage advantages when typical universities like UD annually host dozens of international conferences and events. This fosters an environment for developing English proficiency among students and lecturers, aiming towards global citizens as well as meeting the practical demands in the context of a fiercely competitive labor market.
