Technical support session under the Partnership for Higher Education Reform Project: Spreading the spirit of scientific integrity and research ethics

From March 21-22, 2024, technical sessions within the framework of the for Partnership for Higher Education Reform Project (PHER) focusing on scientific integrity and academic research ethics was taken place at the University of Danang.

Participated in the series of events Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Quang Son – Vice President of The University of Danang (UD); Prof. John Baumann - Vice President in charge of research ethics compliance from Indiana University (USA); Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu - Deputy Head of the Department of Science and Technology, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Sinh - Vice Chair of Research Ethics Council - University of Social Sciences and Humanities (both from Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City).

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Quang Son - Vice President of UD, scientific integrity and research ethics are "the foundation of trust and respect in the academic community". This is a prerequisite for healthy scientific development. UD always focuses on promoting and spreading this spirit along with the culture of ensuring educational quality in the community of scientists, lecturers and researchers.

Through the sessions of the workshop, it is a good opportunity to represent leaders of PHER Project Management Boards and ODA Projects; Departments of science, technology and international cooperation of UD’s member universities and affiliated training units can access and learn from experts on this topic of scientific and topical significance.

Representatives of UD's leadership wish and request experts to give comments, advise and share experiences and solutions in developing regulations/rules and operating the Research Ethics Council in practice so on that basis UD’s staff, lecturers/ researchers can research, exchange and apply appropriately in consulting, operating and management practice. The goal is to constantly improve and enhance the quality and capacity of management, and scientific research for sustainable development.

Delegates discussed at the sessions

 

At the technical sessions, delegates heard and discussed the contents presented by guest experts, introducing focuses such as: The role of the Research Ethics Council and the responsibilities of its members, management staff with international experience; experience in developing and implementing Scientific Integrity Regulations; Research Ethics Council model at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City.

Decree No. 109/2022/ND-CP of the Government issued on December 30, 2022 regulating science and technology activities in higher education institutions has Article 20 (Chapter IV) on Academic Integrity, which states clearly: "Higher education institutions promulgate a set of rules on academic integrity in science, technology and innovation activities, ensure the principles of honesty, responsibility, fairness, transparency in accordance with practice and according to international practices; At the same time, "issue internal regulations, control tools, and handling measures" to prevent violations in this activity.

The PHER Project is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for three leading universities in Vietnam, including UD, Vietnam National University in Ha Noi, and Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, in the form of non-refundable technical support with partner Indiana University (USA).

Spreading the spirit of scientific integrity and academic research ethics

 

Through this Project, it creates opportunities to connect and support consultation on the development of Vietnam's higher education system through enhancing sustainability, autonomy and improving management capacity, quality of training and science research , innovation and business cooperation of UD and 02 Vietnam National Universities in Hanoi and Chi Minh City.
