President of The University of Danang received and worked with semiconductor chip expert Philip Hoang

18/11/2024

On October 25, 2024, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu – President of The University of Danang (UD) had a meeting and worked with Mr. Philip Hoang - a Semiconductor chip expert.

Also attending were Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Thanh Bac - Vice President of UD; Director and Vice Director of the Department of Academic Affairs and Educational Quality Assurance of UD; representatives of the Board of Rectors of UD’s member universities: University of Science and Technology (UD-DUT), University of Technology and Education (UD-UTE); Vietnam - Korea University of Information and Communication Technology (UD-VKU).

Panorama of the working session at UD

Speaking at the meeting, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu – President of UD said that, following the results of previous online work between the two sides, UD is honored to work with experts in the field of semiconductor chips.

The President of UD introduced to the partners some general and outstanding features of UD, which currently has 06 member universities, 01 university under UD and 03 affiliated training units, including 03 member universities training in Semiconductor Microchips (University of Science and Technology (UD-DUT), University of Technology and Education (UD-UTE); Vietnam - Korea University of Information and Communication Technology (UD-VKU).

UD currently has about 2,600 staff, including more than 1,600 lecturers, most of whom are well-trained abroad; the proportion of lecturers with PhD degrees is nearly 50%; the training scale is about 60,000 students/ trainees and is one of the largest training centers, among the top in the country.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu – President of UD spoke

The President of UD shared that the Ministry of Education and Training, Da Nang City, and UD are very interested in developing the Semiconductor Microchip industry, focusing on training human resources for Semiconductor Chip engineers. All 03 member universities of UD mentioned above have enrolled and trained in this industry since 2024; at the same time, the universities have proactively opened short-term training courses for source lecturers and students/trainees of related industries to meet immediate needs.

In addition, UD focuses on promoting the exchange of lecturers and students, creating conditions and opportunities for students to do internships and experience abroad as well as being ready to receive and support international students to study and research.

Semiconductor chip expert Philip Hoang spoke

Mr. Philip Hoang - Semiconductor chip expert shared his honor to work with UD to train human resources for this field; at the same time expressed his desire to cooperate with UD to focus on chip design.

The partner representative said that the group of experts is ready to contribute ideas on the content and training programs on semiconductor microchips and related subjects, thereby helping students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the output capacity and requirements of the semiconductor industry.

Vice President of UD Le Thanh Bac and leaders of the Department of Academic Affairs and Educational Quality Assurance discussed

Expert Philip Hoang shared that some initial results of implementing short-term training courses at UD-DUT are very significant, for example, some graduates have been highly appreciated by prestigious enterprises such as FPT, having enough knowledge and specialized skills to work in a professional environment. Therefore, through these practical activities as well as shortly, the two sides can continue to co-organize short-term training courses and provide consultation, share experiences, and support scholarships for students.

Appreciating the capacity of the member universities of UD and the great practical need to strengthen the capacity building of this field, expert Philip Hoang discussed some related issues such as supporting scholarships to encourage and create conditions for students; attracting talented people interested in studying semiconductor chips, especially students with potential but difficult circumstances.

Representatives of university leaders discussed

Along with that is the issue of output to support students to have jobs suitable to their major; receive career counseling and gain experience in applying and interviewing for jobs at prestigious corporations and enterprises. The expert said that he will connect more with the business community to support more and more job opportunities, recruiting students studying Semiconductor Microchip as well as graduating from related training courses.

Expert Phillip Hoang suggested that to implement these key orientations, there needs to be synergy and reinforcement from organizations, agencies, and businesses such as the National Innovation Center (NIC) as well as the Da Nang city government to mobilize resources, promote potential, and advantages to accompany semiconductor chip human resource training.

VLSI Microcircuit Physical Design Class at UD-DUT

At the meeting, delegates discussed the actual needs of member universities of UD, the level of response, and experience from short-term training courses implemented such as at UD-DUT. This will be an important start for the parties to continue to perfect and implement the following training programs; give comments and propose to perfect the training content to fill some gaps if any to improve the quality and effectiveness of training under actual needs.

In an atmosphere of trust and understanding, the two sides wish to continue cooperation, strengthen ties and mobilize resources so that UD can pioneer in training high-quality human resources for the semiconductor industry in accordance with the orientation and strategy of the Government and the Ministry of Education and Training, as well as contribute, first of all, to Da Nang city and neighboring localities.

Summary and awarding of certificates to students

participating in the course "VLSI Microcircuit Physical Design"

According to expert Philip Hoang, in November, the partner will continue to work with partners such as NIC, FPT, and Tresem Organization to implement a short-term training course on Semiconductor Circuit Design with advanced tools and methods, including continuing to open a VLSI Microcircuit Physical Design class; and at the same time, open a new class on Circuit Testing with licensed software.

According to experts, the level of these two courses is fundamental and has an important foundation for students to continue to develop their expertise in semiconductor chips in the future. These are typical programs that can be replicated to become one of the solutions suitable for the reality of UD and Danang city.
