The University of Danang leverages to promote lecturers’ research
03/03/2025
One of the goals in the Education Development Strategy to 2030, vision to 2045 is that by 2030, the average number of scientific publications and applied scientific and technological projects per full-time faculty member should reach 0.6 projects per year. This requires higher educational institutions to enhance quality and focus more on the research capacity of their faculty members.
Interdisciplinary research groups
Higher education institutions are urgently collecting statistics and reviewing the number of research topics and scientific publications of lecturers to develop appropriate solutions, ensuring the target of achieving an average of 0.6 project per year per lecturer.
With 156 full-time lecturers, in the 2023 - 2024 school year, the average scientific publication of University of Technology and Education - UD reaches 0.403 article per lecturer per school year.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Vice Rector of University of Science and Education - UD, reported that in 2024, the university had 134 international publications indexed in WoS and Scopus; 436 additional domestic and international publications.
The international publication rate reaches 0.56 article per lecturer; the overall publication rate is 2.2 articles per lecturer. In the 5 years from 2020 - 2024, the number of scientific research publications of the school is more than 2,000 articles, more than 500 international publications on WoS and Scopus.

With its own characteristics, University of Science and Education - UD has a solution to increase the rate of scientific research for lecturers in the fields of social sciences, humanities, and education.
In addition to the reward policy for lecturers with scientific publications, the university also sets a bonus of 50 million VND for lecturers who meet the associate professorship, 100 million VND if they meet the professorship, and requires lecturers to be PhD students. The university also invests in key scientific research projects at a rate of 100 million VND per project with the requirement of international publication.
To enhance research quality and ensure a seamless connection between scientific research, teaching, and community service, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu stated that the university has formed strong interdisciplinary research groups. These groups closely align with the scientific and technological priorities of the Government and the Ministry of Education and Training.
Building strong interdisciplinary research groups is a strategy that many universities are actively implementing. According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Hai from the Department of Civil and Bridge Engineering at University of Science and Technology - UD, multidisciplinary research has already become a global trend and will continue to shape the future.
After 15 years of studying, teaching, and researching in Japan, Dr. Hai returned to Vietnam. He is now collaborating with colleagues from both Vietnam and Japan on research projects in optics, chemistry, architecture, education, and social sciences.
Diversified funding sources
Scientific research and technology transfer from universities contribute to the economic and social development of the country and localities. However, given the limited budget, achieving the target of 0.6 project per year per faculty member remains a challenge for many universities.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Trung Hung, Vice Rector of University of Technology and Education - UD, although the university's current publication rate exceeds the threshold set by higher education standards, it only achieves 84% of the strategic target. The university still faces challenges in faculty recruitment and research equipment limitations, making it difficult to maintain the current publication rate.

Apart from allocating 5% of its budget to support scientific and technological activities, the university also encourages faculty members to apply for research grants at all levels, and collaborates with businesses in scientific research.
Sharing the personal experience, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Tung Lam, Dean of the Finance Department at University of Economics - UD, emphasized that writing grant proposals is a crucial skill for researchers. A well-prepared proposal is not just about securing funding; it is also required to convincingly present research ideas, strongly predict project success rates, and open new research opportunities.
