Representative leaders of the UD welcomed and worked with Professor Daniel M. Kammen, Johns Hopkins University

On 3 December 2025, Professor Daniel M. Kammen of Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, Berkeley, a member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, paid a working visit to the University of Danang (UD) .

Associate Professor Dr. Trần Hữu Phúc, Vice Chair of the UD Council, chaired the reception and working session. Also in attendance were representatives from the Department of Science and International Cooperation, the Institute of Advanced Science and Technology, and faculty and staff from the University of Danang - University of Science and Technology.

UD representatives briefed Professor Kammen on the university’s profile and development strategy, emphasizing its role as a key regional university with six member institutions and affiliated training units, serving approximately 65,000 students.

The leadership highlighted UD’s designation as one of four “model universities” in Viet Nam, receiving priority investment to advance into the top 150 universities in Asia. Current investments focus on core technology fields such as semiconductors, biotechnology, and financial technology, with the aim of strengthening research and technology transfer capacity in line with industry and local development needs, and fostering interdisciplinary research groups.

UD’s leadership proposed strengthening cooperation to connect and invite leading international professors to share academic expertise, co-supervise and participate in training and research programs, and establish research groups at UD to implement joint projects in priority fields. These activities are expected to lay the foundation for deeper, long-term cooperation, enhance the quality of human resource training, and promote research outcomes with high practical applicability.

As a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University and a member of the VinFuture Prize Council, Professor Kammen expressed his readiness to serve as a bridge connecting UD with leading international academics. He expressed particular interest in cooperation in electric vehicles, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and smart transportation.

Professor Kammen also welcomed the possibility of hosting UD faculty and students for research and training exchanges at Johns Hopkins University, while exploring opportunities to send Johns Hopkins students to Viet Nam for study and research programs.

Professor Kammen has held appointments at several leading U.S. universities and currently serves as a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University. His work focuses on energy systems and climate equity, and he has extensive experience advising international organizations and leading major research projects, with more than 500 scientific publications.

He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. His research contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
