Recently (October 16, 2025), the University of Danang - University of Science and Technology (UD - DUT) hosted the kickoff event for the project under the Global Innovation Program to address plastic waste, featuring the Resource Recovery Facility (Material Recovery Facility - MRF) model at the university’s student dormitory.

Dr. Huynh Phuong Nam, Vice Rector of UD-DUT stated that this project is meaningful in contributing to environmental protection for sustainable development. The implementation of the MRF at the student dormitory not only raises awareness but also connects and transfers knowledge and technology for effective waste management, aiming towards a “Green University” model and demonstrating social responsibility and joint efforts for environmental protection.

Dr. Huynh Phuong Nam noted that in recent times, UD - DUT has invested in infrastructure and equipment, creating a convenient, friendly, and safe learning environment, highlighted by upgrades to the dormitory and the application of Smart Campus solutions to better serve students.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kieu Thi Kinh from UD - University of Science and Education, representing the research group and serving as the project expert, explained that this is an innovative research project within the framework of the “Global Plastic Innovation Program (GPIP)” funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The project aims to establish habits of waste sorting at source within the community, with students as the young, pioneering force to help reduce plastic pollution through appropriate solutions, increase recycling rates, and promote a green lifestyle and sustainable development awareness in universities.
In the coming period, stakeholders will coordinate with the university to organize practical training sessions on plastic waste sorting, supervise and pilot the operation of MRFs to enhance long-term and sustainable effectiveness, and apply research results in practice.
