Expanding international academic exchange opportunities for faculty and students applying digital technologies in construction infrastructure development

Recently (from September 7 to 9, 2026), the University of Danang - University of Science and Technology (UD - DUT) hosted a series of academic exchange activities providing opportunities for faculty and students to apply digital technologies in construction infrastructure development. The highlight was an international networking seminar themed “Advanced Digital Technologies in Infrastructure Engineering.”


Overview Seminar

Building on the strong partnership between UD - DUT and institutions and units under Yokohama National University (YNU), Japan such as the Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, the university connected, supported, and assigned the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Center for Student Support and Corporate Relations, and the I-STAR Research Group to coordinate these academic exchange activities.

The program aimed to share knowledge, new technologies, and practical solutions applicable in reality, contributing to the development of mindset and innovative capabilities, while providing opportunities for faculty and students from both sides to integrate internationally in a multi-cultural academic environment.

The program featured prestigious scientists and experts from both sides, including Prof. Dr. Kasai Naoya and Dr. Le Quang Trung (along with 11 YNU students), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Ngoc Duong, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Hoang Nam, Deputy Head of the Academic Affairs Department and Leader of the I-STAR Research Group (along with 12 students from UD - DUT). Discussions focused on professional topics in civil engineering as well as BIM and AI applications.


Awarding certificates to participating students

According to student representatives, mixed student teams from both universities worked together on interdisciplinary directions, such as: applying BIM and Digital Twin in the management and operation of infrastructure facilities; leveraging AI and Computer Vision for structural recognition, monitoring, and safety assurance; utilizing IoT and Structural Health Monitoring technologies; and combining GIS, Remote Sensing, and Resilience to assess infrastructure adaptability against adverse impacts.

The practical value of these international exchange activities was highlighted by field surveys of infrastructure systems and transportation structures in Da Nang city, as well as an exploration of the relationship between architectural history and local culture aimed at heritage preservation and sustainable development in the ancient town of Hoi An.

The practical significance lies not only in fostering international cooperation in education and research, but also in broadening perspectives, sharing solutions, and applying new technologies to address local challenges with global implications.
